Shawnee State University
Master Degree in Occupational Therapy

Bachelor of Arts in Communication,
Bachelor of Science in Sports Performance
School of Liberal Arts
School of Education and Exercise Science

“As an occupational therapist, I will use my strong background in communications and my desire to promote social justice by speaking for patients when they are not being heard, and committing myself to ensure their overall well-being in mind, body, and spirit.”

Finley immediately felt at home at Marian University. She enjoyed the small classes and appreciated the professor’s ability to provide individual attention to their students. Finley also had an internship as a bicycle newsletter editor for the Indiana Bicycle Coalition and a two-year internship with the Office of Marketing Communications, pursuing her interest in sports journalism. Soon, she realized that she wanted a career where, as she says, “I could actively make a difference in people’s lives and see the result of that change.”

Becca Finley fell in love with cycling while participating in triathlons at Iowa State University. Her coach there encouraged her to pursue cycling more seriously and pointed her in the direction of Marian University. Marian University is one of the many colleges in the country that offers scholarships for members of the cycling team. After talking to cycling coach, Dean Peterson, and a few professors, Finley packed up her bags and transferred to Marian University in 2008.

As a cyclist, Finley participated in numerous events and races, but most notably the women’s team time trial that took home the gold and helped Marian University win the 2010 USA Cycling’s Collegiate Road National Championships, as well as the women’s team pursuit on the track that won nationals in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Finley competed in all four events: road, track, mountain, and cyclocross. Finley and Sierra Siebenlist ’10 were part of the two-person team who competed in collegiate mountain bike nationals for the first time in 2009. Her participation in the successes of the cycling team, combined with the hands-on approach in her sports performance courses, sparked an interest in helping others through sports and fitness. Finley plans on pursuing a master degree in occupational therapy at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio beginning in August 2011.
