Arthur Spencer '12

  • Bachelor of Science in Accounting
  • Byrum School of Business

“All I thought about was getting into college. I decided that I could be somebody. I didn’t have to follow in the footsteps of some of my family members. College was my way out.”

In seventh grade, Arthur’s teacher gave his class an application for the 21st Century Scholars Program. “For the first time, college was a possibility,” he says. In high school, he channeled all of his energy into his schoolwork. Now settled in at Marian University, Arthur has embraced everything that college life has to offer, from participating in service work for the first time, to learning the piano, to attending plays and speakers, to serving as class treasurer. And he now has a deep appreciation for education and the 21st Century Scholars Program. “If there were programs like that all over the United States, we would see so much change. People who know that they can go to college, who know they have a future—they are so much happier.”

Arthur Spencer is going to be an accountant. But that wasn’t always the plan. If you had asked him as a child what he wanted to be when he grew up, he wouldn’t have been able to give you an answer. Growing up, everyone he knew lived day to day. College was not an option; his family couldn’t afford it. “I never took school seriously because I didn’t see a use for it,” Arthur says. “It is a hopeless life, when you don’t think about your future and you don’t think you can go to college.”
